The team of light heavyweight Eleider Alvarez refused to participate in the promotional bids for the fight against Oleksandr Gvozdyk, previously appointed for this Friday at WBC headquarters. Alvarez and Gvozdyk were about to fight for the vacant interim title and full-fledged champion Adonis Stevenson was to defend his title against Badou Jack.
Alvarez has been an official contender for the title of Stevenson for several years, but instead of getting a meeting with the Canadian, he has already had three fights with other opponents.
"Alvarez has wins in three final title eliminator and currently hold wins versus the #9, #10 and #12 WBC contenders. He has stepped aside only once, never got money for it and we can’t see the logic to have to do a fourth title eliminator. He is number one on merits! His goal is to fight against the champion," said Alvarez's promoter, Yvon Michel of GYM.
Formally, Michelle is also the promoter of Adonis Stevenson, but the affairs of the champion are managed by manager Al Haymon, and Michel acts only as a mediator of two boxers.
