WBO super featherweight champion Vasyl Lomachenko is set to defend his belt this weekend against Colombian Miguel Marriaga. Should he retain the title, the decorated amateur is already looking ahead to potential opponents, including Mikey Garcia who picked up a dominant decision win over Adrian Broner last weekend and is widely expected to move back down to lightweight.
Speaking on a conference call after the fight Lomachenko was less than impressed: âI did see [Mikey Garciaâs] fight, his trainer Robert Garcia at one point called Mikey Garcia a fighter of the âAâ class. I didnât see anything during that bout where he was a Class-A, outstanding fighter.â
Lomachenko may not have been impressed, but Garcia was widely praised for schooling âThe Problemâ in Brooklyn. âYes, he won the fight. Yes, he did everything to win the fight, but I havenât seen nothing outstanding,â argued âHigh-Techâ. âI havenât seen him being an A-Class fighter and it was slow. I almost fell asleep!â
Robert Garcia, older brother and trainer of Mikey responded in kind, â[Lomachenko] said on the call that Mikey didnât look good, that he wasnât impressed. Reach out to us. Itâs an easy fight to make. Letâs do the fight in November. Letâs see if they call me. I bet you they donât call me.â
