Tsarukyan Blasts UFC Matchmaking: Why Are Veterans Like Gaethje and Oliveira Still Getting Shots?

Arman Tsarukyan, the No. 2-ranked UFC lightweight, took direct aim at the promotion’s matchmaking philosophy, arguing that older contenders keep getting major opportunities while younger fighters are pushed aside.

Arman Tsarukyan is making it clear he is not a fan of how the UFC is handling the lightweight title picture. Speaking with veteran MMA journalist Ariel Helwani, the No. 2-ranked contender questioned why established names like Justin Gaethje and Charles Oliveira continue to receive high-profile opportunities while rising fighters wait their turn.

Tsarukyan put it bluntly, saying he does not understand why "old guys" such as Gaethje and Oliveira keep getting chances. In his view, the division needs fresh names, and fighters who have recently broken into the top 10 or top 15 should be given opportunities against top-five opponents.

His frustration comes at a time when the lightweight division remains one of the UFC’s deepest and most commercially important weight classes. From an American fan perspective, Gaethje and Oliveira are still huge draws because of their action-first styles and proven résumés, but Tsarukyan’s criticism reflects a broader debate in MMA media: should the UFC reward established stars, or accelerate the next generation?

Tsarukyan also has a strong competitive case to make. In his most recent fight last November, he scored an emphatic submission win over New Zealand’s Dan Hooker, a result that strengthened his standing in the race for a title shot. At 155 pounds, where contender traffic jams are common, performances like that are supposed to separate a fighter from the pack.

The bigger question is what comes next. If the UFC continues leaning on veteran names, Tsarukyan risks being stuck behind fighters with bigger brand recognition. But if the promotion chooses merit over star power, he looks like one of the clearest fresh challengers in the division. Either way, his comments add more pressure to a lightweight title picture that is only getting more crowded.
