Charles Oliveira vs. Ilia Topuria and Justin Gaethje at UFC White House? Ex-Champ Angles for Backup Role

Fresh off his BMF title win over Max Holloway at UFC 326, Charles Oliveira is already positioning himself for another run at the top of the lightweight division.

A major lightweight title fight between Ilia Topuria and Justin Gaethje is set for June 14 at the UFC’s historic White House event, and Charles Oliveira wants to be part of it one way or another. Oliveira, coming off a statement win over Max Holloway at UFC 326, is prepared to serve as the backup fighter in case either headliner is unable to compete.

That wrinkle matters because the 155-pound division is suddenly moving fast again. With Islam Makhachev no longer clogging the immediate title picture, the winner of Topuria vs. Gaethje could define the next phase of the division, and Oliveira clearly wants to make sure he stays at the front of the line.

Oliveira’s head coach, Diego Lima, told Sherdog that the former UFC lightweight champion has already been offered up as the reserve option for the main event. The camp is hoping both Topuria and Gaethje make it to fight night healthy, but Oliveira is ready if the promotion needs him.

The stakes are obvious. If Topuria wins, UFC gets a younger two-division star with real momentum in the American market. If Gaethje wins, the promotion gets one of its most reliable action fighters back in undisputed title territory. Either way, Oliveira remains a dangerous, credible next challenger, especially after reestablishing himself with a marquee win.

From an American fan perspective, Oliveira’s name adds instant intrigue to the backup spot because he has long been one of the sport’s most volatile elite fighters: a finisher who can turn a fight in seconds. He also brings a strong résumé edge into any matchup at lightweight, holding the UFC record for most submission wins and owning victories over several former champions and contenders.

If Oliveira is not needed on June 14, the expectation is that he will pursue the winner soon after. And if the new champion is sidelined for an extended stretch, his team appears ready to push the UFC toward another high-profile option — possibly an even bigger fight than a standard contender bout.
