Lennox Lewis and Hasim Rahman want boxing to crack down hard on steroid use. The two former heavyweight champs spoke up after Terence Crawford beat Canelo Alvarez in a big fight.
Crawford's win brought up old talk about Canelo's past trouble with drugs. Back in 2018, Canelo tested positive for clenbuterol before he fought Gennady Golovkin. He said it came from bad meat.
Rahman thinks fighters should lose money if they get caught. He told Radio Rahim on the Seconds Out podcast:
"I think whenever you're in a championship fight, you should get 20% of your purse until all the testing comes back. And if it comes back dirty-if you pop dirty-half should go to the commission, half should go to the opponent."
Lewis agrees that cheating is bad for boxing. He said:
"People who cheat don't believe in themselves. And people who cheat don't want to do the work. They don't want to do the work it takes to be a champion. Your brain has to make you work hard. That's what makes you work hard. Don't take a pill or a shot to make you work hard."
Both Lewis and Rahman say fighters who use steroids shouldn't be called the greatest of all time. They point to Canelo as an example. His past positive test and questions about his trainer Eddy Reynoso's other fighters make them doubt him.
This talk about steroids in boxing goes beyond just Canelo. It makes people wonder about other boxers who've been caught up in drug scandals too.
Lewis and Rahman want boxing to get tougher on cheaters. They think it will make the sport safer and fairer for everyone.
