Larry Holmes, the former heavyweight champion, has come clean about his 1978 fight against Ken Norton. Holmes now says Norton should have won that bout.
In a recent YouTube interview, Holmes made a startling admission about the fight that kicked off his seven-year world title reign.
"Kenny Norton kicked my a** and I don't care what anybody says. They gave me the title."
The fight took place in the summer of 1978 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Holmes won by split decision after a grueling 15-round battle. This victory marked the beginning of Holmes' long run as world heavyweight champion.
Known as "The Easton Assassin," Holmes held the heavyweight title from 1978 to 1985. He started his career with an impressive 48-fight unbeaten streak. During his reign, Holmes racked up notable wins against tough opponents like Earnie Shavers, Tim Witherspoon, and Muhammad Ali.
Holmes' career took a turn after losing twice to Michael Spinks. He then faced a young Mike Tyson in 1988, resulting in another loss. Later in his career, Holmes also fell short in challenges against Evander Holyfield and Oliver McCall.
As for Norton, he fought a handful of times after the controversial Holmes bout. His career came to an end in 1981 when he faced Gerry Cooney, a two-time heavyweight title challenger. Cooney knocked out Norton in the opening round, leading to Norton's retirement.
Holmes' recent admission sheds new light on a pivotal moment in heavyweight boxing history. It shows that even decades later, fighters can still surprise us with their honesty and reflections on their careers.
