Rolando 'Rolly' Romero keeps winning and has now become the WBA welterweight champion. The Las Vegas fighter got a big boost when Jaron 'Boots' Ennis decided to move up to 154 pounds and give up his title.
Romero's career has turned around lately. He lost to Gervonta 'Tank' Davis by knockout and then got stopped by Isaac Cruz, losing his WBA super lightweight belt. But he bounced back with a win over Manuel Jaimes and then beat Ryan Garcia. Now, he's grabbed the WBA welterweight title.
On the other hand, Ryan Garcia's having a tough time. He lost to 'Tank' Davis by knockout, got suspended for a year, and then lost to Romero. It's been a rough stretch for the young fighter.
The welterweight division's seeing some changes. While Romero's got the WBA belt, Brian Norman Jr. holds the WBO title and Mario Barrios has the WBC. The IBF belt's still up for grabs.
There's action coming up in the division too. Norman Jr.'s set to fight Devin Haney for the WBO title in November. And Barrios just fought to a draw with Manny Pacquiao.
For Romero, this title win opens up some big chances. He could go for bigger fights or try to unify the belts. There's also a shot at the vacant IBF title. But for now, he's said he wants to take some time for himself.
"I want to take time for myself," Romero said. "I've been fighting back-to-back-to-back, and I want to enjoy my belt."
With this win, Romero's put himself right in the mix at welterweight. It'll be interesting to see what he does next and how the division shakes out in the coming months.
