Vergil Ortiz Jr wants to fight Errol Spence Jr. The undefeated super-welterweight contender called out the former welterweight champion, describing it as his 'dream fight'.
Ortiz Jr holds a perfect record of 23 wins with 21 knockouts. He recently outpointed Israil Madrimov in Riyadh on February 22, 2024. That win came after he picked up the WBC 'interim' super-welterweight title by beating Serhii Bohachuk in August 2023.
Spence Jr hasn't fought since his first professional defeat two years ago. Terence Crawford dominated him from the opening bell in their undisputed welterweight championship fight in Las Vegas, stopping 'The Truth' in the ninth round. Spence lost his WBC, WBA, and IBF welterweight titles that night.
There were rumors of a comeback fight for Spence against WBC world super-welterweight champion Sebastian Fundora, but that didn't happen. Spence has stayed quiet about his future in boxing.
Now, Ortiz Jr is calling him out. In an interview with the Ariel and Ade Show, Ortiz Jr explained why he wants this fight:
"It would mean a lot to me because I grew up with Spence. I think I first went to his gym when I was about 11 years old and we trained together for a good amount of time at Vivero Boxing Gym in Oakcliff. It would just be a cool full circle moment, I just can't explain it because I was there. It's just that feeling. It would mean a lot to me."
Ortiz Jr pointed out the similarities in their fighting styles:
"Everyone always says Errol has a good body shot and he fights like a Mexican. People always say I fight like Errol. We came from the same gym. It's crazy."
While Ortiz Jr waits for Spence's response, another potential opponent looms. Jaron Ennis has vacated his welterweight belts and plans to move up to super-welterweight, setting up more exciting possibilities in the division.
