Shakur Stevenson proved he's one of the best fighters in the world. The WBC lightweight champion dominated William Zepeda on Saturday night at Louis Armstrong Stadium in Queens, New York.
Stevenson won by unanimous decision with scores of 119-109 and 118-110 twice. He kept his undefeated record and defended his title for the third time since winning it in November 2023.
The American champ has won world titles at featherweight and super-featherweight before. But lately, people criticized his fighting style and performances against Edwin De Los Santos and Artem Harutyunyan.
This time, Stevenson changed things up. He moved less and fought in a more fan-friendly style. Zepeda, the undefeated mandatory challenger, put up a good fight. He landed more punches on Stevenson than any previous opponent.
CompuBox numbers show how the fight went. Zepeda threw 979 punches but only landed 272. He missed over 700 shots. Stevenson was more accurate. He landed 295 out of 565 punches, connecting on over 50% of his shots.
After the fight, Stevenson set his sights on a bigger target. He wants to unify the lightweight division. His goal? A showdown with long-term rival and WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis.
"I want Gervonta Davis next," Stevenson said. "That's the fight everyone wants to see. Let's make it happen."
With this win, Stevenson silenced his critics and showed he can beat tough opponents in style. Now, boxing fans will wait to see if the Davis fight becomes a reality.
