Jake Paul, the 28-year-old YouTuber-turned-boxer, beat former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in a cruiserweight bout. The fight took place on June 28 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, with Paul winning by unanimous decision.
Paul took control from the start, and Chavez Jr didn't put up much of a fight. This win marks Paul's sixth straight victory since losing to Tommy Fury two years ago.
After the fight, Paul entered the WBA cruiserweight world rankings at number 14. This move upset many in the boxing community.
In an interview with Seconds Out, two-weight world champion Carl Frampton shared his thoughts on the situation:
"It's a joke, I mean you can pick 15 better cruiserweights in England than Jake Paul. I don't think he has the capabilities to win an English title but I think you have to give him credit as well."
Frampton also raised some concerns about the fight:
"He's improving, he's trying his best to be a boxer but he picks and chooses the opponents correctly, now I'm not saying this is the case but it all seemed a little bit fishy in the last fight that Chavez only started throwing punches in the last two rounds."
He added:
"Is there some sort of agreement? I don't know but it just all looked a little bit suspicious."
Paul's team strongly denies any suggestions that their fights aren't legitimate.
The 28-year-old Paul now has his sights set on bigger names in the division. He's targeting fights with WBA and WBO champion Gilberto Ramirez and WBC champion Badou Jack. It's not clear yet if Paul will get his wish.
Meanwhile, the 39-year-old Chavez Jr, once a promising fighter from Mexico, continues to struggle in his boxing career.
