Jaron Ennis is moving up to super-welterweight for his next fight. The unified IBF and WBA welterweight world champion will give up his current titles to take on new challenges.
'Boots' Ennis has been a dominant force at 147 pounds. He unified the IBF and WBA titles with wins over Eimantas Stanionis and David Avenesyan. Now, he's ready to test himself in a higher weight class.
Earlier this year, Ennis had a chance to fight Vergil Ortiz Jr. Instead, he chose to stay at welterweight for a unification bout with Stanionis. That decision paid off as Ennis added another belt to his collection.
Recently, talks of an Ennis-Ortiz fight started up again. Vergil Ortiz Sr claimed on social media that they offered Ennis a big payday for a fight later this year.
"We offered Boots over six million dollars to fight Vergil. 6.5 million to be exact. He asked for over 10 [million] and two tune up fights."
Vergil Ortiz Jr backed up his father's statement, simply saying, "It's true."
Ortiz Jr is an undefeated hard-hitter who recently beat Israil Madrimov by unanimous decision. He's coming off hand surgery and holds the WBC Interim title.
With Ennis moving up and Ortiz recovering, fans will have to wait for news about their next opponents. Both fighters have proven themselves as top talents, and their future matchups will surely generate a lot of interest.
