Manny Pacquiao will step back into the boxing ring next month. The 46-year-old Filipino legend plans to face WBC world welterweight champion Mario Barrios on Saturday, July 19, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Pacquiao ended his professional career in 2021 after losing to Yordenis Ugas. He's since had two exhibition bouts - one against DK Yoo in 2022 and another versus Rukiya Anpo earlier this year. Now, he's aiming for a full comeback in the pro ranks.
The eight-division world champion already holds the record for the oldest welterweight titleholder. He grabbed that distinction in 2019 at age 40 when he beat Keith Thurman for the WBA welterweight belt. A win against Barrios would push that record even further.
Juan Manuel Marquez, who fought Pacquiao four times and knocked him out in 2012, shared his thoughts on the comeback with Pro Box TV. He said:
"If Pacquiao feels good, no shoulder, knee, or foot injuries, and he's perfectly fine then let's give him the benefit of the doubt. Let's see what kind of fight he has to put up against Mario Barrios. Will he be aggressive? Will he rely on his power? Because power is the last thing a fighter loses. Let's give the benefit of the doubt to a historic fighter."
Marquez pointed out that while fighters might lose reflexes, rhythm, and speed with age, power often remains. He noted that Pacquiao still hits hard and trains well. The question is how Barrios will handle that power.
"What matters is the integrity of the fighter. Pacquiao still hits hard. Let's see how Barrios handles that. Remember, power doesn't go away. You might lose reflexes, rhythm, speed, but the power stays. When you're a disciplined fighter and Pacquiao is, he trains, he prepares, he's coming in to win and to knock him out."
If Pacquiao pulls off a victory, he'll break his own record as the oldest world welterweight champion in history. It's a tall order at 46, but the Filipino star has made a career of defying expectations.
The fight promises to be an intriguing clash between the experienced legend and the reigning champion. Boxing fans will watch closely to see if Pacquiao can turn back the clock one more time.
