Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez has spoken up about Jaime Munguia's recent doping test failure. The former super-welterweight world champion tested positive for exogenous testosterone metabolites during fight week of his rematch with Bruno Surace in 2025.

Munguia, 28, and Canelo have a unique relationship. They fought each other in May 2024, with Canelo winning on points. Now, they train together under the guidance of Eddy Reynoso.

The Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency (VADA) caught Munguia with the banned substance in his system. This came as a shock to the fighter, who strongly denies any intentional cheating.

Throughout my boxing career, I have undergone numerous anti-doping tests and have never tested positive. I was tested twice during this training camp, and both results came back negative, which is why receiving this notification of an adverse finding has been a complete surprise to me.

Munguia added that he's open to further testing to prove his innocence. He won't comment further until his B sample results come back.

The failed test casts a shadow over Munguia's recent victory against Surace. Their first fight in December 2024 saw Surace pull off a big upset with a knockout win. Munguia got his revenge in the rematch, winning by unanimous decision. Now, Surace wants that result overturned.

Canelo has come out in support of his training partner. He told The Ring Magazine:

We believe in Jaime Munguia, who will surely clear this up soon. And I want to be very clear that Eddy Reynoso doesn't give him his supplements. Eddy is solely dedicated to training him.

Canelo felt the need to address this point because of backlash on social media. Some fans have pointed out that several fighters trained by Reynoso have failed drug tests. Canelo himself served a six-month suspension for having Clenbuterol in his system, though the Nevada State Athletic Commission accepted he didn't knowingly take the substance.

Munguia has ten days to request his B sample be tested. Usually, B samples return the same results as the A sample. If the positive test stands, Munguia could face an investigation, a hearing, a change in his fight result, a suspension, and a fine.
