Roy Jones Jr wants to step into the ring again. The Hall of Fame boxer has offered to fight Julio Cesar Chavez Sr on June 28. Jones Jr's proposed bout would feature on the undercard of Jake Paul's fight against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
Jones Jr, now 56, hasn't lost his appetite for boxing. He defeated Anthony Pettis in an eight-round bout in Wisconsin last year. The former champion shared his thoughts in an interview with Prime Casino.
"I'll fight Julio Cesar Chavez Snr on the undercard of Jake Paul v Chavez Jr. It would all depend on what Julio Cesar Chavez Snr thinks. It will work because we are both legends, and we know what we're doing, so it'll be good. It'll be awesome."
Jones Jr made it clear that the potential fight would be more about showcasing skills than a full-on brawl.
"I would not want to kill him, and he's not there to kill me, which he couldn't, because he's much smaller than me. But I'm not there to kill him. We have to show people what we used to be, why people respected and revered us, so that we're not there to take each other's heads off."
Chavez Sr, 62, retired from professional boxing in 2005 after a career spanning 115 fights and world titles across three divisions. The Mexican legend has participated in exhibition contests since then, with his last one in 2021 against the son of Hector Camacho.
Jones Jr believes this fight could remind fans of the high skill level that once defined boxing.
"We have to show people true skills and understanding of what the sport is missing today – the skill level of boxing has dropped."
The ball's now in Chavez Sr's court. If he agrees, fans might get to see these two legends showcase their skills once more.
Jake Paul continues to make waves in boxing. He's set to face former champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr on June 28. The addition of Jones Jr vs Chavez Sr to the card would surely add another layer of excitement for boxing fans.
