Terence Crawford shared his thoughts on the upcoming rematch between Gervonta Davis and Lamont Roach. The two fighters are set to face off again after their controversial draw in March.
Davis and Roach first met at the Barclays Center in New York. What was expected to be a straightforward title defense for Davis turned into a surprising draw. The fight's key moment came in the ninth round when Davis took a knee, but no knockdown was scored. Davis claimed he had grease in his eye, which played a crucial role in the fight's outcome.
Now, with a rematch planned for August in Las Vegas, Crawford weighed in on what fans might expect. In an interview with Ring Champs With Ak & Barak, Crawford said:
"I think you're going to get a better Tank, but at the same time I think Roach fought at his peak. I don't think he can fight better than that. Roach can definitely have his number, but that doesn't mean Tank can fight the same fight. He can let his hands go more."
Crawford believes Davis will step up his game in the rematch. He pointed out that Davis needs to change his approach, saying, "You've got to start picking it up and throwing multiple." Crawford noted that in the first fight, Davis often threw only one or two shots at a time, even when landing on Roach.
While Crawford expects improvement from Davis, he doesn't see much room for Roach to get better. He thinks Roach fought at his best in the first match and won't be able to top that performance.
Not everyone agrees with Crawford's take. Claressa Shields, another boxing champion, thinks Roach will come back even stronger and might win the rematch.
The first fight between Davis and Roach was full of surprises. Fans will have to wait until August to see if the rematch lives up to the hype and settles the score once and for all.
