David Benavidez won't stop calling out Canelo Alvarez, even though Canelo clearly doesn't want to fight him. It's like the old saying goes - the donkey keeps going back to the wheat.
Benavidez, known as 'Red Flag' or the 'Mexican Monster', recently beat Oleksandr Gvozdyk to become the interim WBC light heavyweight champion. He's been trying to get Canelo's attention for a while now, but Canelo's not interested.
Canelo, who's from Jalisco, Mexico, has been pretty clear about his feelings towards Benavidez. He said:
"By the way he talks, he thinks he's a Superman... He hasn't achieved anything."
Canelo's basically calling Benavidez a nobody.
But Benavidez isn't backing down. On the Pound 4 Pound podcast with Kamaru Usman and Henry Cejudo, he fired back:
"If Canelo fights me today, it would probably be the biggest fight of his career... That would be the biggest payday he would earn in his career. If I'm such a bad fighter that he could come and beat me and I'm nothing, why don't you come? Shut up. Earn people's respect and earn a good paycheck. What's the problem?"
Benavidez has done everything he can to get Canelo's attention. He moved up to light heavyweight, beat Gvozdyk, and won the interim WBC title. But Canelo's still ignoring him.
Canelo's got other plans. He's set to fight Terence Crawford on September 13, and he's planning a few more fights before he retires. Benavidez isn't on that list.
The Riyadh Season organizers want to see Benavidez in the mix, but Canelo doesn't even want to talk about it. Some folks are calling Canelo a coward for not choosing Benavidez, saying he's fighting "bums" instead.
Benavidez's supporters think he'd be a much tougher opponent than anyone Canelo's faced lately. But for now, it looks like this fight isn't going to happen, no matter how much Benavidez wants it.
