Ryan Garcia's comeback fight didn't go as planned. The boxer, known as "KingRy," lost to Rolando Romero on May 2 at Times Square in New York after serving a one-year suspension.
Oscar de la Hoya, Garcia's promoter at Golden Boy, wants his fighter to go after Romero again. He's not keen on a rematch with Devin Haney. De la Hoya told YouTube channel FightHype why he thinks Haney isn't the right choice:
"Devin lost by winning... His popularity has gone down a lot."
De la Hoya didn't hold back when talking about Haney's fighting style. He said:
"He is said to be just a runner, not a boxer. This guy is a runner, why would I want to see that?"
The promoter believes both Garcia and Haney need to show more in the ring. He thinks Haney must prove he can do more than just avoid punches.
De la Hoya is pushing for Garcia to face Romero again. He told reporters:
"So it would be the right thing for him. Seek revenge. So, he better do it."
Garcia seems to agree with his promoter about not fighting Haney. He told FightHype:
"That's not the direction we want to go. Not at all."
He didn't mince words when asked about a Haney rematch:
"He doesn't deserve a rematch."
Turki Alalshikh might play a role in deciding Garcia's next fight. He's likely to want to organize the rematch between Garcia and Romero.
For now, it looks like Garcia will try to bounce back from his recent loss. His team is focused on finding the right opponent to help him do that.
