Ryan Garcia is looking at what's next after losing to Rolando Romero on May 2. The fight in Times Square, New York, didn't go Garcia's way. Romero knocked him down in the second round, and Garcia missed his chance to become the WBA 'regular' world welterweight champion.
This loss was Garcia's second in his career and his first time back in the ring in over a year. He had been out of action because of a positive drug test before his planned fight with Devin Haney in April 2022.
Oscar De La Hoya, Garcia's promoter, has some ideas about what should happen next. In a chat with Fight Hype, De La Hoya ruled out a rematch with Devin Haney.
"No, that's not the direction we want to go [Haney rematch], zero whatsoever."
Instead, De La Hoya thinks Garcia should try to get even with Romero. He said:
"Well as a fighter, speaking to you as a fighter, not a promoter, that's exactly what I would do right? So that would be the right move for him I think, go get revenge and you know in boxing you're as good as your last fight so might as well go."
De La Hoya believes a rematch with Romero makes sense. It gives Garcia a chance to bounce back and show he's still got what it takes.
Even though De La Hoya isn't thinking about a Haney rematch right now, fans around the world have been asking for it. Garcia and Haney had a controversial first fight over a year ago, and many want to see them go at it again.
Garcia, who's 26 and from California, will have to think hard about his next move. Known as "King Ryan", he'll want to prove he still deserves that nickname. Whether it's against "Rolly" Romero or someone else, Garcia's next fight will be crucial for his career.
