Alvarez, now 34, started his pro career at just 15 years old back in 2005. He's fought almost 70 times since then. On May 3, he reclaimed his undisputed super-middleweight title with a points win over William Scull. That made him the first fighter ever to become undisputed champion in that weight class twice.
In a recent chat with FightHype, Canelo didn't hold back when talking about Benavidez:
"I think the way he talks, he thinks he's Superman, and he's very disrespectful, not just with me with everybody, and he's accomplished nothing."
Canelo went on to say:
"He's not even a champion, he's not even in my weight class already and you know there's a lot of things that doesn't make sense, plus this point in my career I can do whatever I want."
Benavidez has been trying to get a fight with Canelo for a while now. He used to be the mandatory challenger for Canelo's WBC super-middleweight belt. But after talks for that fight fell through, Benavidez moved up to 175 pounds.
Now, Benavidez has become the new WBC light-heavyweight champ. That happened after Dmitry Bivol, the second man to beat Canelo, gave up the title to chase a third fight with Artur Beterbiev.
Even though many fans want to see Canelo and Benavidez face off, it looks less likely than ever to happen now. Canelo seems set on doing his own thing, while Benavidez has moved up in weight.
Canelo's comments show he's not impressed with Benavidez's accomplishments or attitude. It looks like these two champions will keep going their separate ways for now.
