The fight set a new record, and not in a good way. Only 445 punches were thrown in total during the 12 rounds. That's the lowest number since CompuBox started keeping track. Canelo landed 152 punches, while Scull managed to land 293.
Canelo fought in a careful, patient way. He focused on hitting Scull's body when he got the chance. Scull, on the other hand, moved around more but didn't land many good hits or defend himself well.
After the fight, Canelo didn't hide his frustration.
"It was a boring fight. I hate that type of fighter. When a fighter isn't trying to win, he's just trying to survive. That's why I don't like fighting guys like that. They can only survive until the 12th round and that's why I don't like them. I hope it's a different kind of fight in September."
Scull didn't agree with Canelo's take on the fight.
"They beat me in a fight without hitting me. The truth is, it's a shame. Boxing falls into that because at the end of the day it's boxing, not getting hit."
Fans watching the fight weren't impressed either. Many took to social media to share their disappointment. One fan joked, "Honestly, the fight had some knockout moments; I'm pretty sure I knocked out several, and I wasn't the only one, zzzzzz." Another compared it unfavorably to Ryan Garcia's recent fight, saying, "I don't know what was worse, Ryan Garcia's fight or this? Pathetic."
Despite the lackluster performance, both fighters got paid well. Canelo took home $80 million, while Scull earned $3 million - his biggest payday yet. Before this, Scull's biggest purse was $300,000 for his fight against Shishkin.
Canelo's not wasting any time looking ahead. He's set to face Crawford on September 12th in Las Vegas. Fans are hoping for a much better show this time around.
