Ryan Garcia's return to the ring didn't go as planned. The 26-year-old boxer lost to underdog Rolando 'Rolly' Romero in Times Square this week. Romero won by unanimous decision after knocking Garcia down.
Garcia came back after a one-year doping ban. His last fight against Devin Haney ended in a no contest. This time, Garcia struggled. He got knocked down and didn't throw many punches. After the fight, Garcia said he'd work on his mistakes and try to find his killer instinct again.
Romero surprised everyone with his win. He fought smart and controlled the fight. This victory is the best of his career so far.
The judges all agreed Romero won the welterweight bout. This upset messed up plans for a rematch between Garcia and Haney.
Former heavyweight champ Mike Tyson watched the fight. He said:
"I don't think [it was meant to happen that way.] I can't believe it. He just took the heart out of Ryan. Once he dropped him, Ryan didn't fight back at all … I didn't expect that. I just expected Ryan to really go all out … What about Haney and [Rolly]? I want to see the best fight the best … [Rolly] controlled every round, pretty much."
On the undercard, Devin Haney beat Jose Ramirez. But people said Haney didn't look that great.
What's next? Garcia says he'll rematch Haney if fans want it. He also wants another shot at Romero. Tyson thinks Haney should fight Rolly next. We'll have to wait and see what happens in the welterweight division after this shakeup.
