Larry Holmes, the former heavyweight champion who fought Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson, and Evander Holyfield, has made a bold claim. He says he's the best boxer ever, challenging the idea that these three are the greatest heavyweights.
Holmes held the world heavyweight title from 1978 to 1985, defending it 20 times. He beat Muhammad Ali in 1980 when Ali came out of retirement, winning by a 10th round stoppage. Later in his career, Holmes lost to Mike Tyson in 1988 and Evander Holyfield in 1992.
In a recent interview with Sky Sports, Holmes explained why he thinks he's the greatest. He said he copied and improved Ali's style.
"Everyone said I was just a copy of Muhammad Ali, just because I idolised they guy, he hit, boxed, moved around and looked good, I like his style, I copied some of his styles, his jabs and moves and whatnot and I bettered it."
Holmes feels he doesn't get enough credit compared to other boxing stars. He pointed out the difference between his reign and Mike Tyson's:
"I don't get the recognition that I should get, like a Mike Tyson."
Holmes defended his title 20 times and was champion for seven and a half years. Tyson, on the other hand, had three or four defenses and was champion for seven months.
The former champ also compared himself to Ali, saying Ali didn't hold the title as long as he did. Holmes went on to declare himself the greatest:
"Why can't I fit in that box, why does Muhammad Ali have to be the greatest, he can say he's the greatest, you can say he's the greatest, but I know different, I'm the greatest."
Holmes' comments have sparked debate in the boxing world. Many fans and experts still view Ali, Tyson, and Holyfield as the top heavyweights of all time. But Holmes' record and long reign as champion make a strong case for his place among boxing's elite.
