Gervonta Davis' trainer, Kenny Ellis, has shut down talk of a potential fight with Shakur Stevenson. Ellis claims Stevenson missed his chance to face Davis by not accepting a previous offer.
In a recent interview with MilCity Boxing, Ellis made it clear they've moved on from considering a bout with the WBC lightweight champion.
"You missed the boat. He missed the boat. They don't control us. They don't tell us when to move. They don't tell Tank when to move," Ellis said.
When asked if Stevenson might have declined due to hand issues, Ellis responded, "It's a possibility. You never know."
The trainer also hinted at the possibility of Davis retiring from boxing.
"As Tank says, he could retire. We'll have to wait and see what he does. Whatever he does, I'll respect it," Ellis stated.
Ellis suggested that Stevenson wasn't the only fighter who missed out on facing Davis. "Many of these guys had the opportunity and didn't take it. Move on. Life goes on," he added.
Stevenson, currently the WBC lightweight champion, has been eyeing a move up to 135 pounds for a big-money fight with Davis. With that option now seemingly off the table, he might consider jumping to 147 pounds, where potential matchups with Ryan Garcia or Devin Haney could await. However, at his age, such a leap might be premature.
For now, Stevenson is focusing on securing a fight with William Zepeda. He recently took to X (formerly Twitter) to address the situation:
"The fight is ordered by the WBC. I'm still champion and I'm not retiring from anything. If we can't come to an agreement [with Golden Boy], then there will be a purse bid. See you soon."
Stevenson has also expressed dissatisfaction with an offer from Turki Alalshikh, claiming he was offered less money than for his last fight against Josh Padley.
As the lightweight division continues to heat up with threats like William Zepeda, Raymond Muratalla, Andy Cruz, Abdulla Mason, and Jadier Herrera, it remains to be seen how the landscape will shift in the coming months.
