Floyd Mayweather's undefeated record isn't sitting well with everyone. His former promoter, Bob Arum, has voiced some strong opinions about a fight that could have changed the boxing legend's perfect 50-0 career.
Mayweather hung up his gloves in 2017 with that spotless record. He'd grabbed world titles from super-featherweight all the way up to super-welterweight and beat some of the biggest names in the sport. Manny Pacquiao, Oscar De La Hoya, and Canelo Alvarez all fell to 'Money' Mayweather during his reign as the pound-for-pound king.
But Top Rank chief Bob Arum, who used to promote Mayweather, reckons that zero in the loss column shouldn't be there. He's pointing to a fight against Jose Luis Castillo as the one that got away.
"Castillo won that fight, eight rounds to four. I mean, no question about it."
Arum didn't pull any punches when he spoke to ESPN about the controversial bout. He brought up HBO's Harold Lederman, who had it 116-111 for Castillo, and pointed to the punch stats as evidence.
The promoter recalled going into Mayweather's corner right after the fight. He claims Team Mayweather thought they'd lost, and the crowd started booing when the decision was announced.
Mayweather agreed to a rematch on the spot. Arum thinks this quick decision showed that even Floyd knew he hadn't performed well.
It's not just Arum who's questioning this fight. Top trainer Freddie Roach has also said he thinks Castillo should have got the nod that night.
This debate shows that even in a sport where records mean everything, there's always room for a bit of controversy. Mayweather's 50-0 might look perfect on paper, but in boxing, not everyone sees things the same way.
