Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney's rematch might not happen, according to Oscar de la Hoya. The Golden Boy Promotions head believes Jose Ramirez will beat Haney in their upcoming fight, throwing a wrench in the plans for a Garcia-Haney sequel.
De la Hoya didn't mince words when he shared his thoughts on the Haney-Ramirez matchup. He said:
"I feel that Ramirez is going to beat up Devin Haney. We're not going to see two Ryan Garcia-Devin Haney. I think Ramirez will stop the show. I think Ramirez is going to beat up Devin Haney."
This prediction comes after a rollercoaster of events following Garcia and Haney's first encounter. Last April in New York, Garcia initially won by majority decision. But his victory was later overturned when a banned substance, ostarine, was found in his system. The Mexican-American fighter got slapped with a one-year suspension and had to pay fines. Haney even sued Garcia for assault, fraud, and breach of contract.
To sort out the legal mess, Garcia agreed to a rematch with Haney in 2025. This deal got Haney to drop the lawsuit. But now, with de la Hoya's prediction, the rematch might not materialize if Haney loses to Ramirez.
Both Garcia and Haney have fights lined up for May 2 in New York. Garcia will face Rolly Romero, while Haney will square off against Jose Ramirez. The outcomes of these fights will likely determine if the Garcia-Haney rematch happens.
Hall of Famer Tim Bradley weighed in on Garcia's upcoming bout with Romero. He's backing Garcia to win by knockout, specifically with his left hook. Bradley noted:
"I think Ryan will catch him with that left hook and it will be an unforgettable night."
Bradley also pointed out changes in Garcia's demeanor. He observed that KingRy seems calmer, more respectful, and behaves like a "real businessman." Bradley expects Garcia to be more focused in the ring because of these changes.
As May 2 approaches, all eyes will be on New York. The results of these fights will shape the future of the lightweight division and determine if fans will get to see Garcia and Haney face off again.
