Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford might face off in a big fight, and Oscar de la Hoya has shared his thoughts on it. The former champion and promoter sees the match as a chance for Crawford to make history.
De la Hoya and Canelo have a rocky past. They worked together for over 10 years, with Oscar claiming he made Canelo famous in the US. But things went sour when Canelo felt Oscar was taking advantage of boxers. Now, there's bad blood between them.
Even so, De la Hoya recognizes Canelo's skills in the ring. He told FightHype:
"I've been in this sport for so long and, as a historian, I say: there has never been a good little guy who beats a good big guy, it just hasn't happened."
De la Hoya thinks this fight could change that. He added:
"But a good little man like Crawford has never beaten a good big man like Canelo in the history of the sport. If you beat Canelo you can go down in history as one of the greatest fighters of all time on the planet."
There's one exception to De la Hoya's rule: when Manny Pacquiao beat him. But he says that was different:
"The exception would be (Manny) Pacquiao to beat me, but that situation was totally different. A little guy like Crawford has never beaten a big guy like Canelo in the history of boxing."
Right now, Canelo's got a fight lined up. He'll face William Scull (23-0) on May 3 in Saudi Arabia. The Crawford match isn't set yet, but there's talk it could happen on September 13 in Las Vegas.
Canelo's future looks busy. His promoter, Turki Alalshikh, has plans for him in 2025 and 2026 too.
If Crawford and Canelo do fight, it'll be a big deal. Crawford could make history if he wins. But first, we'll have to see if the match gets made.
