Imane Khelif, the Algerian Olympic welterweight champion, has fired back at claims she's transgender. The boxer addressed the issue in a recent interview with ITV News, responding to comments made by former US President Donald Trump.
Khelif won gold in the welterweight division at the Paris Olympics, catching the attention of Trump. He congratulated her as a "young woman who transitioned from man to boxer" in a social media post. Khelif didn't hold back in her response.
"The president of the United States issued a decision related to transgender policies in his country. I am not transgender. This does not concern or intimidate me."
The champion boxer made it clear that her gender identity isn't up for debate. She stated firmly:
"I was born a girl, I grew up as a girl and I have lived my whole life as such. I have competed in numerous tournaments, including the Olympic Games and other major competitions, as well as four world championships."
Khelif's road to success hasn't been smooth. She faced cyberbullying that left her "deeply mentally affected," leading her to file a lawsuit in August. The boxer mentioned that prominent figures like Elon Musk and Rowling were involved in the online attacks.
"Once I started to achieve success, campaigns against me began."
The controversy didn't stop at social media. Khelif couldn't compete in the World Championships after failing gender eligibility tests set by the International Boxing Association (IBA).
Despite the challenges, Khelif isn't backing down. She's got her sights set on defending her Olympic title at the Los Angeles 2028 Games.
"I want a second gold medal, of course. In the United States, in Los Angeles."
Khelif's determination shines through as she continues to fight both in and out of the ring, aiming to silence her critics with her performances.
