Shannon Briggs wants to fight Deontay Wilder. The former WBO and lineal heavyweight champion has challenged Wilder to a bout in Alabama.
Briggs, now 53, hasn't fought since 2016. He racked up 60 wins in his 68-fight career. Despite his long absence from the ring, Briggs insists he's not done with boxing.
"I would like to fight him, I think it would be a great fight in Alabama when he comes back. I never really retired, they just won't fight me. I'm going to fight in March so if he wants to go, we can go."
Briggs made these comments in a recent interview, laying out his plans to return to action in March.
Wilder, known as 'The Bronze Bomber', held the WBC heavyweight title for years. He made a name for himself with his powerful knockouts, beating fighters like Luis Ortiz, Bermane Stiverne, and Dominic Breazeale.
But Wilder's career took a turn after his trilogy with Tyson Fury. The first fight ended in a draw, but Fury won the next two by stoppage. Since then, Wilder has struggled. He lost on points to Joseph Parker and suffered a knockout loss to Zhilei Zhang.
There's talk of Wilder coming back to the ring, but nothing's set in stone yet. While Briggs wants to face him, it's not likely to happen. Briggs hasn't fought in years and is well past his prime.
The heavyweight division is wide open right now. Many former champs and contenders are trying to get back in the title picture. Wilder might have a shot at another title run if he can bounce back from his recent losses.
