Ryan Garcia will step back into the ring on May 2 in Times Square, New York, facing off against Rolly Romero. The fight marks Garcia's return from a one-year suspension imposed by the New York Athletic Commission for violating their substance abuse policy.
Riyadh Season, headed by Turki Alalshikh, chairman of the Saudi General Entertainment Authority, will organize the event dubbed "Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves". The card also features a co-main event between Devin Haney and Jose Ramirez, with Teofimo Lopez and Arnold Barboza on the undercard.
Garcia's last fight saw him strip Haney of the super lightweight belt, though he couldn't claim the title after failing to make weight. Romero, on the other hand, comes into the match fresh off a victory against Pitbull Cruz.
The build-up to the fight has already started heating up. In a recent interview with Ring Magazine, Romero didn't hold back his thoughts on Garcia:
"In Devin's case, we clearly know that he didn't try and that he doesn't want to be champion. He wants to be a model. The only thing I'm interested in right now is Ryan Garcia."
Romero continued his verbal assault, criticizing Garcia's fighting style and dedication to the sport:
"I don't think he has evolved as a fighter. He does the same shit."
The two fighters have a history, having sparred together under manager Abel Sanchez. This past connection adds another layer of intrigue to their upcoming clash.
While trash talk often serves to drum up interest in fights, Romero's comments highlight the controversial nature of Garcia's public image in boxing. As the May 2 date approaches, fans can expect more heated exchanges between these two outspoken fighters.
