The fight for Davis' WBA lightweight title ended with two judges scoring it 114-114, while one gave Davis the edge at 115-113. But it's what happened in the ninth round that got everyone talking.
During a flurry of punches from Roach, Davis took a knee. Referee Steve Willis started a count but stopped at three, allowing Davis to wipe his eye before restarting the action. Davis said he knelt because grease from a hair treatment burned his eyes.
Fans weren't happy with how it all went down. If the ref had ruled it a knockdown, Roach might have walked away with the win.
The NYSAC looked into it and said Davis' knee touching the canvas should have been called a knockdown. But they also said it's up to the ref to make that call during the fight.
"It's impossible to know if the final three rounds would have played out the same way if it had been counted as a knockdown,"the NYSAC stated.
Making things trickier, the instant replay tech wasn't working during the fight. So, the ref couldn't double-check what happened.
The Daily Mail and ESPN both reported on the NYSAC's final decision, which puts this chapter of boxing controversy to rest - at least officially.
