Gervonta Davis' Controversial Win Stands After Commission's Unexpected Verdict: "We Reviewed Every Round"

The fight got people talking when Davis took a knee in the 9th round. The referee didn't count it as a knockdown, which could have given Roach a 10-8 round and potentially the win.

After the fight, Roach's lawyer sent a letter to the New York State Athletic Commission. They wanted an investigation into what happened. Dan Rafael reported that the lawyer argued Davis had basically quit the match.

"The sequence of acts taken by Mr. Davis – turning away from the action mid-round, walking to his corner, and partially exiting the ring – was a clear indication that he had retired or quit the match."

Roach's team believed he should win the fight. They suggested three ways this could happen: a TKO because Davis left the fight, disqualifying Davis for having something illegal in the ring, or changing the scores to count the knockdown.

"Mr. Roach is confident that the Commission will agree with the millions who have seen the fight and determine that Mr. Roach is the true winner of the bout – either via TKO due to Mr. Davis removing himself from the Bout or being disqualified for carrying an illegal irritant into the ring, or via decision after scores have been adjusted to reflect the knockdown."

The New York State Athletic Commission looked into what happened. They've now made their decision. Lance Pugmire tweeted that the original result will stand.

"Told by an individual that the NYSAC has ruled to keep @Gervontaa @OneOf1x a draw, more to come on @boxingscene as information develops."

Even with this decision, we might see these two in the ring again. Davis has said he's up for another fight with Roach. It looks like that rematch could be next.
