Chris Eubank Jr. and Conor Benn's upcoming fight got people talking after Eubank slapped Benn with an egg at their first press conference. This odd move caught the attention of Billy Joe Saunders, who once fought Eubank himself.
Saunders beat Eubank back in 2015, winning the British, Commonwealth, and European middleweight belts on points. Even now, there's no love lost between them, with Saunders saying he'd be up for a rematch.
The Eubank-Benn fight carries on a rivalry from their dads' era. They were supposed to fight last October, but it got called off when Benn tested positive for a banned substance. Now, Benn's been cleared to fight in the UK again, and the match is back on.
At the press conference, Eubank broke an egg on Benn's face. This was a dig at the WBC's suggestion that Benn's failed tests might have been due to eating too many eggs.
Saunders shared his thoughts on this egg incident in an interview with BoxNation. He said:
"Look, I mean, boxing is a clown's game. Fighters they're on that stage, is Conor Benn really bothered about an egg up his face? Not really. His eye's perfect, he's perfect, he's in unbelievably good spirit for this fight, he's very confident and I believe he can do the job. I think the fans are in for a good fight."
Saunders called boxing "a clown's game" but doesn't think the egg stunt bothered Benn much. He sees Benn as confident and in good spirits. Despite Benn moving up from welterweight to fight at 160lbs, which makes him the underdog, Saunders believes he can win.
