Canelo Alvarez doesn't think much of Terence Crawford's chances against him. The Mexican superstar assessed Crawford's recent performance at 154lbs and came away unimpressed.
Crawford beat Israil Madrimov by unanimous decision last August to win the WBA light middleweight championship. The victory made him a four-division world champion, but Canelo doesn't see it as a great accomplishment.
In an interview with Sways Universe, Canelo said:
"Don't get me wrong, he's a great fighter but for me, in my weight class, it's an easy fight. Easy money… I don't like to fight guys like Crawford because he moves a lot and the fight is not that great, I saw in his last fight and he doesn't move that much now… there are weight classes for a reason."
Canelo noticed Crawford looked slower at the higher weight and predicts an easy fight if they meet at 168lbs.
The super middleweight champ doubled down on his criticism in another interview with Fight Hype:
"He lost. I think he knows why there's weight classes there, right? He make a good fight, but for me I think he lost the fight. Or draw. It could have been the other side."
Canelo believes Crawford should have lost his undefeated record against Madrimov.
Crawford wants to become a five-weight world champion by challenging Canelo. It'll be the toughest test of his career. Canelo has ruled the super middleweight division for almost five years.
Before any potential mega-fight with Crawford, Canelo will face William Scull for the IBF championship on May 3 in Riyadh. He'll try to recapture the undisputed championship.
If Crawford can defy the odds against Canelo in September, he could become a three-division undisputed champion. But based on Canelo's comments, the Mexican star doesn't think that's likely to happen.
