Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford are getting ready for a big fight. The two champions will face off later this year for Canelo's WBC, WBA, and WBO super middleweight titles.
WBC 'Interim' super welterweight champion Vergil Ortiz Jr thinks Crawford will have a tough time. He believes 'Bud' will be too small for Canelo at 168 pounds.
The fight got confirmed recently, with Crawford trying to become a world champion in five weight classes. At 37, the fighter from Omaha, Nebraska has already been undisputed at super lightweight and welterweight. Now he's aiming to do the same at 168 pounds.
Canelo, 34, from Guadalajara, Mexico, has been the top dog at super middleweight since 2020. He's beaten big names like Gennady Golovkin, Jermell Charlo, and Jaime Munguia. Before he meets Crawford, Canelo will defend his titles against IBF champion William Scull on May 3.
Ortiz shared his thoughts with Boxing Social:
"My honest opinion is that I think he's gonna be too small. Canelo is still Canelo, you know. Crawford is probably number one pound-for-pound, but what pound-for-pound means if they were all in the same weight class, they are not in the same weight class. He just moved up right, I can still say he just moved up from 147 to 168, there are weight classes for a reason."
Ortiz thinks the weight difference will make a big impact on how competitive the fight will be:
"Now, if they were in the same weight class then it's a different story, it will be a way more competitive fight but they're not."
The boxing world will watch closely as Crawford jumps up two weight classes to challenge Canelo. It's a big risk, but if he wins, he'll make history.
