Gervonta Davis, the unbeaten WBA lightweight champ, says Floyd Mayweather Jr. is the fighter he'd most like to face. He also thinks Mayweather would be his toughest test.
Davis, known as 'Tank', holds a perfect 30-0 record with 28 knockouts. The 30-year-old from Baltimore is set to defend his WBA crown against Lamont Roach Jr. on March 1 in New York City.
In a recent podcast appearance, Davis was asked about his dream fight. His answer was simple:
"Me vs. Floyd [Mayweather]."
When Boxing News asked him who'd be the toughest opponent, Davis didn't hesitate:
"Probably Mayweather [would be the toughest]"
Mayweather, now 47, hasn't fought professionally in almost nine years. His last pro bout was a win over UFC star Conor McGregor in August 2017. Since then, he's only had exhibition matches against Tenshin Nasukawa, Logan Paul, and Aaron Chalmers.
The connection between Davis and Mayweather goes back. Mayweather used to promote Davis early in his career. But they split up in 2022.
While Davis dreams of facing Mayweather, he's also hinted at leaving the sport soon. He's said he's "grown tired" of boxing and might quit within a year.
For now, Davis keeps winning. But he's made it clear - if he could pick any opponent, past or present, it'd be Floyd Mayweather Jr.
