George Foreman, the former heavyweight champion, has opened up about a long-standing regret from his illustrious boxing career. The 75-year-old fighter, known as 'Big' George, wishes he'd shown better sportsmanship after his loss to Muhammad Ali in their legendary 1974 bout.

Foreman's career at the top of the heavyweight division spanned over two decades. He first claimed the world heavyweight title in 1973 with a knockout victory over Joe Frazier in Kingston, Jamaica. After successfully defending his title twice, Foreman faced his first career defeat against Muhammad Ali in the famous 'Rumble in the Jungle' fight in Zaire in 1974.

In a recent interview with Square Mile, Foreman revealed his biggest regret from that night:

"I wish I'd gone across the ring and said, 'good fight, champ'. I wish I'd done that."

The 'Rumble in the Jungle' was a turning point in boxing history. Foreman entered the ring as the favorite, with many expecting him to score a devastating knockout. However, Ali had other plans.

In the early rounds, Foreman came out aggressively, looking for an early finish. Ali countered with his now-famous 'rope-a-dope' strategy, allowing Foreman to punch himself out. As the fight progressed into the later rounds, Foreman began to tire.

The tide turned in the second half of the fight. With Foreman exhausted, Ali seized his opportunity in the 8th round. He applied pressure and stopped Foreman, capturing both the WBC and WBA heavyweight titles in a stunning upset.

Foreman's admission shows how this loss has stayed with him over the years. It's a reminder that even the greatest athletes can have moments they wish they'd handled differently. His regret also highlights the importance of sportsmanship in boxing, a sport often characterized by its fierce competition.

Despite this setback, Foreman's career continued to flourish. He eventually reclaimed the heavyweight title later in his career, cementing his place as one of boxing's all-time greats. His reflection on that night in Zaire adds a human touch to the legend of 'Big' George Foreman.
