Tyson Fury called it quits on his boxing career last month after losing twice to Oleksandr Usyk. The heavyweight champion's decision came as a surprise to many fans and fellow fighters.
Fury's first clash with Usyk happened in May 2024. It was the first undisputed heavyweight title fight in over 20 years. Usyk won by decision, even having Fury on shaky legs in the ninth round.
The rematch took place in December 2024. This time, the fight was more technical, with neither boxer getting hurt badly. Usyk won again, this time by unanimous decision.
On January 14, 2025, Fury made his retirement official. He told reporters:
"I'd like to announce my retirement from boxing. It's been a blast. I have loved every single minute of it and I'm going to end with this – Dick Turpin wore a mask!"
Fury made this announcement while people were talking about him possibly fighting Anthony Joshua. He wasn't happy with how either Usyk fight ended, calling the second one a "robbery."
Some people don't believe Fury will stay retired. He's quit boxing before, only to come back. Before fighting Usyk, Fury even said he'd keep boxing until he was 50.
Usyk doesn't think Fury's really done either. He told TalkSPORT:
"I don't think about it but I think it is not true. Once Tyson has relaxed, and rested, maybe Tyson will be back. Boxing if you do this for a long time: 10, 15, 20, 25 years then boxing is like a drug."
While Fury's future is unclear, Usyk plans to keep fighting. He's looking at the winner of the upcoming Dubois vs Joseph Parker fight.
If Fury does come back, a fight with Anthony Joshua could be huge. It would be the biggest match in British boxing right now.
Fury, also known as "The Gypsy King," is 36 and lives in Morecambe. Usyk, from Ukraine, is still the unified heavyweight champion, though he dropped the IBF belt. He's now beaten Fury twice and seems ready for his next challenge.
