Mike Tyson Reveals Surprising Pick for Crawford's Next Opponent: "It's Not Canelo"

Ronald Crawley Feb. 10, 2025, 5:10 p.m.

Crawford plans to face Canelo in September. The fight will give Crawford a chance to become the first male fighter to win all four titles in three different weight classes. He's already done it at super-lightweight and welterweight.

Canelo currently holds the WBC, WBA, and WBO super middleweight titles. He'll fight William Scull on May 3 to try and become a two-time undisputed champion at 168 pounds.

Tyson shared his thoughts on the It Is What It Is Podcast. He said:

"You know, I don't like that fight. I don't like that fight. It's just too much weight. He had a close fight with the last guy he fought [Madrimov] cause this guy was big and he was awkward."

Instead of Canelo, Tyson wants to see Crawford take on different opponents. He suggested:

"I want to see him fight one of the Charlo brothers. Or the young brother from Philadelphia, I forgot his name. Ennis. And I want to see Boots Ennis fight one of the Charlo brothers then come back down [in weight.]"

The Charlo brothers, Jermell and Jermall, aren't active right now. Jaron 'Boots' Ennis holds the IBF welterweight title and hasn't lost a fight yet. But Crawford likely won't fight Ennis soon because of his planned match-up with Canelo.

Canelo recently turned down a fight with Jake Paul, putting the Crawford bout back on track. We'll have to wait and see if Crawford takes Tyson's advice or goes ahead with the Canelo fight.
