David Benavidez Sets Sights on New Challenge After Hard-Fought Victory: "I'm Coming for You"

George Fields Feb. 2, 2025, 1:10 a.m.

Both fighters put their titles on the line. Benavidez defended his WBC interim light-heavyweight title, while Morrell's WBA regular belt at 175lbs was up for grabs.

The fight lived up to expectations, with both men trading heavy shots throughout. As the rounds went on, Benavidez started to take control, landing more clean punches and outworking his opponent.

Things got interesting in the 11th round when Morrell knocked Benavidez down. It was a flash knockdown, and Benavidez quickly got back to his feet. Earlier in the fight, Morrell had a point taken away for hitting after the bell, which affected the final scorecards.

After the fight, Benavidez, who's now 30-0, made it clear what he wants next.

"I just want to be the best of my era. I want to unify all four titles."

The fighter known as "The Mexican Monster" has his sights set on the winner of the upcoming fight between Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol. Those two will face off on February 22 in Saudi Arabia.

Beterbiev and Bivol have met before. Last October, Beterbiev won by majority decision to become the undisputed champion at 175lbs. Benavidez plans to be at ringside for their rematch, ready to challenge the winner.

The full fight scores and details are available on ESPN's website for those who want to dig deeper into the action.
