Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez, the 34-year-old boxing champion from Guadalajara, Mexico, says he's entering the final phase of his career. The superstar fighter thinks he'll hang up his gloves around age 38.
Canelo's had a remarkable run in the ring. He's won world titles in four weight classes, from super-welterweight all the way up to light-heavyweight. His record stands at an impressive 66 fights with only two losses. He's currently on a five-fight win streak, beating top names like Gennady Golovkin, Jermell Charlo, and Jaime Munguia.
In a recent chat on The Ring Magazine Podcast, Canelo opened up about his future plans:
"Yeah I'm getting closer [to the end] obviously, but I feel great, I feel better than ever, maybe 38 [years-old]. I think 38 [years-old] is the perfect time to start thinking."
Despite feeling he's nearing the end, Canelo's still at the top of his game. He's got some big fights on the horizon. There's talk of a mega-fight with Terence Crawford in Las Vegas later this year, possibly in September. It's a clash that's got boxing fans buzzing, pitting two of the sport's biggest stars against each other.
But Canelo's path hasn't been without bumps. He was recently stripped of his IBF super middleweight title. The organization took the belt away when Canelo chose to fight Edgar Berlanga Jr instead of mandatory challenger William Scull.
This setback might lead to another big fight for Canelo. He could face the new IBF champ Scull next May, giving him a chance to become a two-time undisputed champion at super middleweight.
Canelo's been the big dog in the 168-pound division since becoming undisputed champ in 2021. His consideration of retirement at 38 falls in line with many top boxers' career spans. But for now, it looks like fight fans have a few more years to enjoy watching one of boxing's biggest stars in action.
