James Toney Reveals Surprising Pick for Davis-Stevenson Showdown: "Not What You'd Expect"

Both Davis and Stevenson are getting ready for fights in early 2024. Davis, the WBA lightweight champ, will take on super-featherweight titleholder Lamont Roach on March 1. Stevenson, who holds the WBC lightweight belt, is set to fight unbeaten Floyd Schofield on February 22.

Boxing fans have talked about a Davis-Stevenson match-up for years. But Toney, who knows a thing or two about big rivalries, doesn't think Stevenson is ready yet.

In a chat with YouTube channel, Toney said:

"Good fight. Shakur Stevenson's a good fighter, but Shakur Stevenson ain't ready for that. Everybody in boxing, you so-called experts, y'all don't know s**t about boxing."

Toney thinks Stevenson needs more time to grow as a fighter. He worries that facing Davis now could mess up Stevenson's career, comparing it to what happened when Terence Crawford beat Errol Spence Jr.

Davis has got some momentum going. He recently surprised everyone by saying he plans to retire at the end of 2025. That news has got people talking about what fights he'll take before he hangs up his gloves.

Toney's not the only big name weighing in on this potential match-up. Canelo Alvarez, the unified super-middleweight champ, has also shared his thoughts on how a Davis-Stevenson fight might go down.

For now, both Davis and Stevenson are focused on their upcoming fights. But with both of them in action so close together, talk of them facing each other will likely heat up even more.
