David Benavidez gets back in the ring this weekend. The fighter known as "The Mexican Monster" will face David Morrell for the WBA regular light heavyweight title in Las Vegas.
Benavidez has quickly become one of the best 175lb fighters after moving up from super-middleweight. He's a two-time champion in that lower division and picked up the interim WBC light heavyweight belt in June with a unanimous decision win over Oleksandr Gvozdyk.
The fight against Morrell will be his second at light heavyweight, but Benavidez isn't planning to stop there. He's open to moving up to cruiserweight in the future.
When asked about potentially facing Oleksandr Usyk, the current unified heavyweight king who's shown interest in moving back down to cruiserweight, Benavidez was honest about his chances.
"To be honest with you I have to deal with these monsters in this weight class first. Usyk? I don't think I have enough experience to go up against Usyk. I'm just being 100% honest, but like you say never say never!"
He shared these thoughts in an interview with Fighthype.
Usyk became the undisputed champion at cruiserweight in 2018 and repeated the feat at heavyweight in 2022. It's clear why Benavidez wants to focus on his current division for now.
A more likely future matchup for Benavidez could be against the winner of the Artur Beterbiev vs Dmitry Bivol rematch for the undisputed light heavyweight title. But first, he'll need to get past Morrell this weekend in Las Vegas.
