Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford are getting ready for a big fight. The two champions might face off later this year at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, possibly in September.
Canelo has been the king of the 168lbs division for almost five years. He was the undisputed super middleweight champion until last summer when he lost his IBF crown. The Mexican star got stripped of the belt after he chose to fight Edgar Berlanga Jr instead of his mandatory challenger William Scull.
At first, Canelo didn't want to fight Crawford. But now, it looks like he's changed his mind. The 34-year-old Mexican seems ready to take on the challenge.
Crawford, who's 37 and from Omaha, Nebraska, is moving up two weight classes for this fight. He won the WBA super-welterweight title last August when he beat Israil Madrimov. Before that, Crawford became the undisputed welterweight champion two years ago when he defeated Errol Spence Jr.
Spence Jr, who lost to Crawford in that big welterweight fight, thinks Crawford has a shot against Canelo. He told FightHub TV:
"It could happen, I mean why not? If Crawford wants to challenge himself to be great then let him try to be great you know, so I'm with it."
Spence Jr believes in Crawford's skills:
"I'll be going for 'Bud' if he fights Canelo, I'll be going for him. I don't know if he's going to win or lose but I'll definitely be going for Crawford. I think if anybody can pull it off he can pull it off."
He also pointed out that Canelo has fought bigger guys before:
"Canelo went up to 175 and fought Kovalev and fought the other guy [Bivol] too, so if he can do it, and he started at 147."
This fight between Canelo and Crawford is shaping up to be a dream match for boxing fans. Both fighters have proven they're at the top of their game. Now, we'll have to wait and see if Crawford can make the jump in weight and challenge Canelo in his domain.
