Joshua, a former two-time world champion, has faced some tough challenges in recent years. He avenged his upset loss to Andy Ruiz and dropped two decisions to pound-for-pound king Oleksandr Usyk. His most recent setback came in a surprise stoppage loss to Dubois last September.
In that fight, Joshua got caught early and struggled to recover. He tried to turn things around in the middle rounds but got caught by a short right hand from the power-punching 'DDD', ending the fight.
Jones Jr shared his thoughts on the fight and Joshua's future prospects in an interview with talkSPORTBoxing. He praised Joshua's trainer, Ben Davison, but questioned some of the in-fight decisions.
"First of all, I'm not saying Ben Davison was a bad trainer, he's a great trainer, but in that situation, I think he might have made a wrong move telling him to gamble cause gambling ain't really the thing to do at that point, especially when the guy has hurt you once."
Jones Jr thinks Joshua has what it takes to beat Dubois in a rematch. He explained:
"I think Joshua can beat him if he wants to, he was in control of the fight at that point, but he got caught early. Then when he got in control he tried to close the door too fast."
The boxing legend offered some advice for Joshua's approach in a potential rematch:
"The most dangerous animal in the world is a wounded animal so I feel like the instructions should have been we've got him now but we can't rush him. Take our time, we're back in control, let's just do this 'til we get him where we want him then we can get him out. So yes, if 'AJ' does the right thing, and is smart, he will beat Dubois."
After the loss, Joshua decided against an immediate rematch and has taken some time away from the ring. Many fans hope to see him in an epic showdown with British rival Tyson Fury, but Fury's recent retirement announcement might put those plans on hold.
As Joshua considers his next move, Jones Jr's analysis suggests that with the right strategy and patience, he could come out on top in a rematch with Dubois.
