Billy Joe Saunders thinks Conor Benn will beat Chris Eubank Jr in their upcoming fight. The former world champion shared his prediction in a recent interview.
The fight between Benn and Eubank Jr is set for late April in London. It's a big deal for British boxing fans because of the history between their dads, who were both great fighters.
This match-up was supposed to happen back in 2022, but it got called off when Benn tested positive for a banned substance. Now, after dealing with legal battles, Benn's suspension has been lifted, and the fight is back on.
Saunders, who beat Eubank Jr on points in 2015, shared his thoughts on the fight with talkSPORT Boxing.
"I fancy Benn. All the pressure is on Eubank. Eubank's getting old now, he's on old legs. Conor Benn's always in the gym, always training hard, looking strong."
Benn hasn't fought much since 2022, just two low-key fights. He's been busy trying to clear his name and get back to fighting in the UK. On the other hand, Eubank Jr has been more active. He lost to Liam Smith, then won the rematch, and also beat Kamil last October.
The fight will be at middleweight, which is 160 pounds. This weight class is new for Benn, who's naturally smaller. Eubank Jr has the size advantage, which is why many bookmakers see him as the favorite.
Saunders pointed out that Benn faces some challenges:
"Conor Benn's got inactivity, he's got to come up to a new weight class. But he's not fighting a world operator at that level. It's a winnable fight for him."
The fight organizers, including Turki Alalshikh and Eddie Hearn, have worked hard to make this happen. The fight was confirmed after Benn's suspension was lifted late last year.
While Saunders is excited about the fight, he's not sure if it'll live up to the hype of their fathers' battles:
"It's a great fight for British fight fans. Are the fans going to be as entertained? I don't know. The dads were true greats who proved themselves at every level possible."
The fight is planned for Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but that's not set in stone yet. As the date gets closer, fans will be eager to see if Saunders' prediction comes true or if Eubank Jr can use his size and experience to win.
