Dmitry Bivol thinks Terence Crawford might have a shot against Canelo Alvarez. The WBA light-heavyweight champion shared his thoughts on the potential mega-fight between the two boxing stars.
Bivol knows a thing or two about facing Canelo. He's one of only two fighters who've beaten the Mexican superstar, alongside Floyd Mayweather Jr. The Russian outpointed Canelo back in 2022 when Alvarez moved up to challenge for Bivol's 175-pound title.
Now, Crawford wants his chance at Canelo. The pound-for-pound star recently won his debut fight at 154 pounds, outpointing Israil Madrimov. But he'd need to jump up two more weight classes to face Canelo.
Bivol shared his take on the match-up in a chat with FightHub TV. He started by stressing the importance of weight classes in boxing:
"I remember when I came to the boxing gym one of the first lessons I learnt was you should respect weight classes."
But Bivol didn't completely write off Crawford's chances. He praised the American's skills:
"But Terence is one of my favourite active fighters. He has good skills, very good skills, maybe he could show us something. He knows already what to do, his coach knows, they will find a solution how to do it."
When asked if he could imagine Crawford winning against Canelo, Bivol kept it short and sweet:
"I can imagine it."
Those four words sum up Bivol's belief that Crawford might have a chance, despite the size difference.
Right now, the boxing world is waiting to see if Canelo and Crawford can strike a deal. Canelo and his team, including Saudi boxing figurehead Turki Alalshikh, seem to be starting talks. If everything falls into place, we might see this super-fight happen in 2025.
Bivol's own win over Canelo was a shocker. Now, we'll have to wait and see if Crawford can pull off a similar feat – if the fight gets made.
