Roy Jones Jr thinks a fight between Gervonta Davis and Terence Crawford at 145 pounds would be a close one. The boxing legend believes Davis's explosiveness could give Crawford a real challenge.
Crawford recently moved up to 154 pounds, while Davis holds the WBA World Championship at lightweight (135 pounds). These two fighters have taken different paths in their careers. Crawford kicked off his campaign at lightweight, became undisputed at super-lightweight, and then cleared out the welterweight division. Davis, on the other hand, has stayed at lightweight but also won a belt at super-lightweight.
There's been some talk between the two fighters. Davis has said he'd knock Crawford out, while Crawford warned Davis not to punch above his weight. But Jones Jr thinks the matchup would be interesting.
In an interview with Real Lyfe Productions, Jones Jr said:
"That's a good damn fight. Both guys have very high IQs, but Tank is very explosive. Explosiveness keeps people in check. I was only able to cover the weights that I covered because I was so explosive."
Jones Jr pointed out that Davis's explosiveness sets him apart from other Crawford opponents. He said Tank has a kind of explosiveness that Errol Spence didn't have when he fought Crawford.
Right now, Crawford has his sights set on a fight with Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez at super-middleweight. That's a big 14-pound jump for Crawford. Davis, meanwhile, will face Lamont Roach Jr in March. At his latest press conference, Davis said he plans to retire at the end of the year.
If Crawford and Davis ever do meet in the ring, Jones Jr's words suggest it could be a fight to remember.
