Terence Crawford found Errol Spence Jr's power less threatening than expected during their recent fight. Crawford, known as "Bud," shared his thoughts after dominating the undisputed welterweight contest.
The bout, initially seen as an even match-up, ended with Crawford stopping Spence in the ninth round. Crawford dropped his opponent three times, showcasing a level of dominance few had anticipated.
In a recent interview with Stephen A Smith, Crawford recalled his in-ring realization about Spence's power:
"After the second round, when I hurt him, I felt as if he couldn't handle my power like I could handle his. I remember him throwing an overhand looping left, and he caught me right on the button, I think it was the first or the second round, and I was just like, 'This is it? Okay. This is gonna be a long night for him.'"
Crawford's assessment might surprise many, given Spence's reputation. Before facing Crawford, Spence had an impressive record of 28 wins with 22 knockouts. He'd stopped notable fighters like Chris Algieri, Kell Brook, and Yordenis Ugas.
Since their fight, both boxers have made moves. Crawford stepped up to super-welterweight and grabbed another world title by decision, ending his ten-fight stoppage streak. He now holds the WBA super-welterweight belt.
Spence is expected to follow suit and move up to super-welterweight for his comeback fight. The WBC has already ranked him number one in the division. He'll likely jump ahead of interim champion Vergil Ortiz Jr for a shot at the WBC super-welterweight title against Sebastian Fundora, possibly in 2025.
A rematch between Crawford and Spence at super-welterweight could happen if Spence wins the WBC title. With Crawford holding the WBA belt in the same division, fans will keep a close eye on both fighters' next moves.
