Lennox Lewis, the last undisputed heavyweight champion before Oleksandr Usyk, has shared his thoughts on how he'd beat the current champ. Lewis gave his take on a hypothetical matchup with the Ukrainian boxer who's been dominating the heavyweight division.
Usyk has made quite a name for himself lately. He beat Tyson Fury in May to grab all four major belts, then did it again in late December. That second win might have even pushed Fury into retirement. Usyk's also undefeated across two weight divisions and has wins over Anthony Joshua (twice), Derek Chisora, and Tony Bellew under his belt.
So, how would Lewis tackle this formidable opponent? He's got a clear strategy in mind.
"I would throw a good uppercut, cause he's susceptible to a good uppercut and I throw a mean uppercut and that's how I would definitely fight the fight."
Lewis shared this insight in a video clip with Fight Hub TV.
There's been talk about Usyk being weak to body shots. He was knocked down by one in his amateur days and took a knee after a low blow from Daniel Dubois last August. But Lewis thinks there might be more to this story.
"Well, anybody who is vulnerable to the body and everybody who is saying it, usually goes away and works on the body. Let them think I'm vulnerable to the body, that's what I want them to think. Now my body is tough, and now if they go to the body I will hit them at the same time."
Lewis suggests Usyk might have turned this perceived weakness into a strength. He could be using it as a trap for his opponents now.
Usyk's next move isn't set in stone yet, but there's talk of a rematch with Daniel Dubois. That could happen in February 2025 if Dubois manages to defend his IBF title against Joseph Parker.
It's clear that even though Lewis is no longer in the ring, he's still got his eye on the game and plenty of insights to share.
