Lennox Lewis doubts Wladimir Klitschko will make a comeback to boxing. The former undisputed heavyweight champion shared his thoughts on the ongoing rumors about Klitschko's potential return to the ring.
Lewis, who retired in 2004, knows a thing or two about comeback speculation. For 20 years, fans have pushed for his return to boxing. Recently, some even urged him to face Jake Paul after Paul's victory over Mike Tyson.
Klitschko, now 48, hasn't fought since his epic showdown with Anthony Joshua in 2017. The Ukrainian lost that fight by 11th round stoppage, ending his near decade-long reign as champion. Before that, he had lost his unified world heavyweight titles to Tyson Fury.
Rumors suggest Klitschko might return to face Fury if he beats Oleksandr Usyk in their upcoming rematch. Another potential opponent is Daniel Dubois, should he defeat Joseph Parker in February.
But Lewis doesn't see it happening. In an interview with IFL TV, he said:
"They've got bigger problems right now. There's a war in their country and they're focused on that. I definitely know that. I don't think he'll come back just to do this."
Lewis and Klitschko were both present at a recent WBC Convention where Turki Alalshikh of Riyadh Season publicly called for Klitschko's return. Lewis recalled the moment:
"[Klitschko] was actually pushing for me to come back. He was like 'I think [Alalshikh] is talking about you Lennox' and I'm like, no, I think he's talking about you! So it was back and forth that way."
Despite the doubts, IBF champion Daniel Dubois has welcomed the idea of a showdown with Klitschko. But for now, it seems the Ukrainian legend has more pressing matters on his mind than a return to the ring.
